Mile After Mile - Story Behind the Song
Updated: Jul 21, 2019

"Mile After Mile" was actually inspired by some dear friends of mine. I was so deeply moved by their commitment to God and by how they live their life on mission, and I liken them to them being missionaries everywhere they set their feet. One day their journey took an unexpected turn and, as they packed up and moved away, I gave them a recording of this song. The song was written for them, but it was also so much for me.
I’ve found that life is a journey, an adventure; and you never really know what lies around the next bend in the road. Sometimes we take that turn only to learn out that the next few miles of the journey are going to be some tough ones. That’s what happened to me. As I went through a particularly challenging time in my life, this song became something I held on to. When I felt sad, I would sing and remind myself that “there’s always a horizon.” When I felt alone, I would declare “through the valleys, through the mountains, You’re the God who’s there for me.” I learned so much about God through that time. Through hard times, I found that God is still good. When it seems that life keeps trying to kick us down, God is the grace we need to keep going.
I’m still in touch with those friends, and so happy to say that they’re doing really well. The great thing about life being a journey is that the road keeps going. The landscape changes, and life eventually gets easier. Challenges don’t last forever, so long as you don’t give up.
Maybe you or someone you know is in a difficult time in life. Let me encourage you to look to The Lord in every moment. He is such a source of strength, hope, and encouragement. And He is ALWAYS with you, mile after mile.
Here are some of the scriptures that inspired Mile After Mile. If you look them up, I know they’ll encourage you as much as they did me!
Psalm 23:4, Psalm 119:1-5, Psalm 139:2-5, John 10:28-29
MILE AFTER MILE
Pack the van
Find the destination on the map
Say goodbye to the house
And to all we had
It's not easy to follow
Something we can't see
But there's something to be said
About this life we lead
There's always a horizon
There's always more to find
And I've found Love is with me
Mile after mile
God will go before me
And God will come behind
God is always with me
Mile after mile
I have heard "are we there yet?"
Playing in my mind
And I may have even said it
A couple of times
You’re the bridge o’er troubled waters
Headlights when I️ can’t see
You’re the road I’m traveling on
You’re the lamp unto my feet
Through valleys, through the mountains
You’re the God who’s there for me
I know I’m in Your hand
Every mile along the journey
